The Next Generation

Last week we had a little goodbye to David, Kristin, Anna, and Josephine, as they're moving to NJ.  It is so sad to say goodbye to our friends, but such a great opportunity for them.  We gathered all the kids together for a quick photo.  Its so funny -- every emotion and opinion was captured in one picture.  And then you have half the parents trying to get the kids to smile down below.  We are so lucky to have such an amazing group of friends.  Our kids totally benefit from it and are making their own memories.  And, it is so fun to have so many kids amongst us too....

Life With a 3 Year Old...

Hi.  My name is Maeve and I'm 3 (holds up 3 fingers).  My mom says I turned into a 3 year old overnight.  I'm not sure exactly what she means, but I hear her say stuff like I'm super independent and have strong opinions.  Isn't that a good thing?  I have mastered my mommy's groan/growl when she's a little frustrated with me -- especially when we're trying to 'run out the door'... what's the rush, mom??  I think I saw a new parenting book show up from Amazon the other day to deal with my new phase of development.  Ha ha.  What my mom doesn't understand is that now that I'm 3 years old I am capable of doing everything by myself.  I am a growing girl, so I am hungry all the time too.  Everything needs to be big... nothing should ever be small, regardless of what you're making reference to.  My mom says that I sometimes talk like a teenager.  I'm just practicing so that I'll have it perfected in 10 years.  My mommy nixed my inflections of FIIIIIINE and OKAAAAAY.  For awhile there I liked to taunt her with mouthing the words instead of saying them.  Now, I just like to remind my mom throughout the day what words I can and cannot say... that way I get away with saying FIIIIINE and OKAAAAAY still.  I have been heard to say MOOOOM, in an exasperated tone.  Well, clearly she deserved it.  duh.  I have a great sense of style, and it bothers me when mom tries to have an opinion about it.  Its my body and my clothes...  mostly mom just lets me wear what I want, when I want.  Apparently I have some really nice clothes in the closet that I never want to wear.  I think I look great.... mommy agrees.  I can be heard saying 'school is booorring'... even though I don't really know what that word means.  I have a lot of fun at school and am starting to learn and sound out all my letters.  Even though I can get frustrated really quickly when things aren't going my way, I still LOVE my snuggles with my mommy. I have found stroking and playing with her ears to be a really soothing... mommy doesn't mind most of the time, she says.  I have realized that I can crawl down from my bed in the middle of the night and crawl into bed with mommy now too... this way I get more snuggles in.  I think I heard mommy say we need to work on that soon, but I'm not exactly sure what she means.  Who wouldn't want me trying to crawl inside their body so that I can get as close as I can get while we sleep??  I love to laugh, pretend play, read stories, do puzzles, and play with my friends.  I love my mommy and she loves me.... we are one happy family.

'I don't want my picture taken, mommy!'

'Oh, hey!'

 'Cheeeese'

Fashion forward...

My sweet girl... with a healthy dose of mischief...

We're getting the hang of riding bikes.  In our entrance we've got a scooter, bike, trike, and skuut bike....

We Went Tubing...

So, earlier in the week, as we were enjoying the warm weather, I thought to myself... a boat ride sounds nice.  The next move was picking up the phone and letting Andrew in on the plan, since he is the one with the boat.  And, as the always giving friend that he is, he obliged.

Sunshine, a boat ride, and snacks = a happy camper...

She was even game for a little tubing action...

She took my lead and was laughing and waving in between thumb sucking... all was well until Andrew put us in converging waves and there were some extra high bounces.  We killed it and she jumped in the boat while Andrew and I took our respective turns behind the boat.

It had been awhile since Maeve and Andrew had seen each other, but by the end of the day they were fast friends...

Getting the full boating experience...

Summer Fun with Friends...

This weekend we went camping on the peninsula... not to sound like Derek Shepherd, but I love ferry boats.  They make me happy.  I didn't take many pictures this weekend, shocking, I know... but here are a few that show Maeve in her element.  I also love summer.  Love love love it...

4th of July

We moan and complain about the weather often, but legitimate whining can only happen after the 4th of July, because that is when summer starts here in the Pacific Northwest.  And, happy days, summer arrived exactly on the 4th.

We spent the day on Whidbey Island, so we hopped a morning ferry to start in on the fun...

We spent the day with Steph and Karl at their cabin...

The kids... mine being sassy and holding a bag of chips she found...

Massive fruit intake to counteract Maeve's massive chip intake that day...

Maeve even got to fly her kite...

People show their patriotism a little louder south of the border... but, hey, we were game.  Although we did have to stop by Dan and Annie's cabin to replace their tattered Canadian windsock.  It seemed only appropriate on the 4th of July.  :-)

Maeve and Peter even participated in the local parade...

They were even throwing out candy to the crowds... while eating their own, of course.

Slip and slide action... and trying to soak mommy with the hose.

We rounded off the evening with authentic foil dinners.  Steph and I were counselors together back in the day, and we'd make these all the time with our campers.  Now the next generation is benefitting from our expertise.  ha ha.

A great great day.

BBQ's and Crabbing Adventures...

We were up to celebrate Larissa graduating from high school.  It was a very fun weekend of family events...

Maeve drinking some sangria...

Maeve obsessed with Uncle Dirk...

Maeve snuggles like this every time she sees Stacy and Jodie's dad, aka Papa... its super cute.

Strawberry milkshakes...

The girls...  including Larissa, the graduate.

The next day, Canada Day, my mom convinced us to join her crabbing...  we didn't know it was going to be so cold!  It was fun nevertheless...

My mom, in all her crabbing glory...

Maeve was happy as a clam.  ha ha.

Kate, being a great cousin to Maeve...

Baby starfish..

Maeve, taunting a released crab...

The crew...

...heading back

A bonus find on the way back...

Pop and Maeve travel at about the same snail's pace... so, they were making conversation all the way back

Bird Sanctuary...

I'm way behind in posting our shenanigans over the last couple of weeks, so here I am catching up.  We headed to the bird sanctuary with my Dad and Lynn, plus Kate.  It was fun and peaceful, except for the Canada geese.  I have post traumatic stress from them attacking me when I was little... as I was innocently holding the bag of bird seed.  Maeve instinctually knew to feel the same and didn't want to have anything to do with the geese.  ha ha.  We saw lots of ducks, bald eagles, and other birds Lynn knew the names of.  Sorry Maeve, flora and fauna are not my strong points.
