Things Took a Drastic Turn...

And the scene unfolds as follows...

I invited ourselves over to Amy's for a lovely BBQ dinner because they have a sweet backyard and it was a warm and sunny day today. Amy and I are seated comfortably in the backyard sipping cool drinks and the children are gleefully playing with the outdoor toys. Amy ignorantly dreams up a fun craft project for the innocent looking 2 year olds -- "painting with your feet mural". The children are stripped down to their underwear and the games begin. Bennett goes along with the plan -- dipping his feet and hands into the paint and appropriately participates in the art project. Maeve almost instantaneously decides its a body paint opportunity. Bennett decides that looks like fun too, and then we have two very decorated toddlers laughing and giggling in the backyard. Clearly, belly prints were the next logical addition to the mural --

And then we lost all control, as evidenced by the following:

Poor Baby Clara... innocently enjoying her post nap lounge on the blanket when she was assaulted by her friend, Maeve. It all happened in slow motion... "Noooooooo", which equated to hysterics by the artists. All I know is that I came home with paint in my hair, on my face, arms, and a newly decorated shirt on the back. Amy faired only marginally better....

And, we haven't laughed quite this hard in a long time.

5 for 5

I don't know how to show other people's blog posts on my blog, so I'll do it old school. Please read THIS and act. Its been breaking my heart knowing what's been happening in the Horn of Africa but not knowing what I could do about it. I can't help but think of Maeve and her country plus Somalia during this horrific time. I would do anything for her.... so many parents, grandparents, family members are trying to do just that for their children. They need help.

Can't Touch This...

Apparently this was a conversation that took place at school today:

Teacher: Maeve.... Stop.
Maeve: Hammer Time.

Seriously? Pretty sure MC Hammer hasn't been on the playlist ever. Funny girl.

Anna, Maeve, and Peter...

Today's happenings...

Confusing...

...and hilarious. Unbeknownst to Anna, she passed down her Little People doll house to Maeve today, and its a hit. There was almost a near miss incident though when Maeve declared that she needed to go potty this afternoon and wanted to go potty on the Little People's toilet instead of her own... a little convincing was required, but thankfully she was successfully redirected!

See the pillow Maeve's holding? She also thought it was a great pillow for her to use and laid herself down on it... ha ha ha

(And, yes Mom, you can finally bring down the doll house you've been inquiring about for some time now :-))

No Longer Contained

There was initially a fair amount of sitting silently in her room awaiting for her to sleep earlier in the week (just after Maeve figured out she could easily scale the crib rail). I have now moved to a chair outside her room, and I feel like we're making some progress in the "keeping the two year old in bed" mission. But seriously... did it take her this long before to fall asleep and I just was ignorantly unaware? Also, she is not fooled by the bed rail, in the least, and happily climbs down after naps and in the morning to greet me. Time will tell if an intervention will be required in the future...

Family Holiday...

From the moment we arrived at the cabin to when we left, it was just relaxing. So much different from the noise and speed that city living offers. It was quiet except for the birds chirping and an occasional ferry horn. Not that I've been feeling especially stressed lately, but my shoulders automatically dropped a few inches, just because. I thoroughly enjoyed my time with Maeve. Although we're a small family, we are a family and we had so much fun on this purposeful family holiday. These are sort of random shots, but it shows a few of the things we did over the course of a week and a half (except for our camping trip, of course)...

Maeve, the hiker. There is a bit of a lazy streak in the child so I was impressed that she actually walked the 0.5 miles down to the beach and approximately 0.25 miles back up the hill, twice that week. We saw bunny rabbits and slugs - clearly highlights.

There was a lot of this by the both of us...

A big highlight -- I had my birthday during the trip. Whoopdee. I don't really care about the birthday per se, but my mom and Elin came down and stole Maeve away for 24 hours so that I could enjoy some friend time. Melanie and Leann cooked dinner and breakfast... yum. I even managed to sleep in for 10 hours. Ahhhh... I kept waking up in the morning, but the difference was that I would just roll right on over :-)

Thanks friends... (and a big thanks to my mom and Elin)

Clothes were definitely optional... books were read aplenty.

"its sunny... I need my sunglasses, mom"

We were spoiled by Ma Z and Pop who had us over for dinner and a little birthday celebration for the both of us...

Fort Casey...

Wine. I was enjoying a glass of wine at this point...

Amy and Baby Clara came and visited for the day (shhhh... don't tell Bennett, because of course we didn't have any fun at all...)

Armed with a bubble gun and not afraid to use it...

Another huge highlight for us was an overnight visit by Kathleen and Elizabeth...

And, another example of why I'm going to be getting many a phone call from her teachers in the future...

Practicing for "Survivor"

Headed home...

Lopez Camping...

I'm working my way through all the photos I took on holidays last week. For 2 nights of our week we met up with our B'ham gang and went camping. This was Maeve's first time -- as I wasn't brave enough to try it last summer when Maeve wasn't walking yet. She and I both had a fantastic time. We are so lucky to have such a great group of friends. We all agreed that we need to extend our camping trip next year to at least 4 nights. Here are a bunch of shots of us getting all dirty and sandy while camping... and generally having a great time.

More ferryboats...

Misha, Mark, and Lance enjoying the sun on deck.

Beach time with Beckett, Cj, Fiona, and Maeve...

We took over 2 campsites for 5 different families... 8 adults and 8 kids. At least we weren't outnumbered.

My good little camper...

Morning cuddles. I need coffee...

Our beach just a few steps away from our campsites.

Zane, I mean, Dash...

Mike brought out the face paints... I'd say it was a big hit by all the little ones. Maeve thought she was a dinosaur and did some roaring. Shhhh.... don't tell her.

Kaya and Daphne -- beautiful butterflies

Popsicles!!

"Maeve -- please don't put sand on your head" Any guesses as to what her next move was?

Bath time... camping style

Cheers...

There were no amateurs on this trip. Yes, my friends, that is paella. Thank you Mark & Misha for being our camping buddies. Seriously, right?? I've never eaten so well camping...

S'more time!

Soltis snuggle time with Maeve...

Pax and Zane = BFF. They spent half the camping trip literally tied to each other.

Fiona, one tired little camper.

Breakfast treats...

Always exploring...

Thank you Ann, Mike, Kaya, Zane, Cj, Lance, Pax, Beckett, Mark, Misha, Daphne, Fiona, Kath, and Wes for a fantastic time.
