Taking Full Advantage...

Seattle, up until this weekend, had reportedly only experienced 78 minutes of summer. And, I have been living in bitterland because of it. I will choose to ignore the grey and damp skies that today has provided because we just had a bonafide summer weekend here! Whaoo Hoo. And, apparently we can add 273 more minutes of summer to our tally. So, we spent no time wasting our good fortune... (Warning... there are a lot of pictures because we did a lot of playing.)

First we hopped onto a ferry to visit Jeff, Carin, and Ryan for the night....

Goodbye Seattle!

Maeve was a happy camper. Thanks for the snuggle Maeve -- I'll take it any time.

And, then we hit the beach. It would appear that Maeve wants to visit her cousins down under as she seems to be practicing her cricket skills... aka skipping rocks.

Oh hey Ryan... I really like you.

Isn't life so great?!

Jeff found the tickle zone...

Oh hey boys... can I go on a boat ride with you??

And, this is what summer's all about...

Checking out the local seals...

"Cheers"... and clink go the popsicles

Ryan driving us home...

Carin and Maeve snuggles.
Thanks so much for a fun and relaxing stay Jeff, Carin, and Ryan. It was great to catch up with Karen and Greg too.

Next it was roomie night. Finny came up from Portland, Cj came down from the 'ham and we had a really fun night just being, and catching up with each other. Thank you Ehling gang for taking Maeve for the night and allowing me a night free with the girls.

And the following day we had a little fun playing at the water park... it was a serious good time for the two year old.

And then there was Gudeta's 2nd birthday to attend that afternoon... How cute are these two??

A cupcake confirms it was a pretty great weekend...

Along with a slide and swings at the park overlooking the ocean. Does it get any better?

And then we decided to close out this pretty great weekend with some of our favorite people...

We miss you sun already... please come and play again really soon.

Random Shots...

My mom and Elin came down for the weekend to watch Maeve while I worked on Saturday... thanks! Elin just sent me some shots she took over the weekend --

Just cute...

She likes her oatmeal, what can I say?

Don't mess with me or else...

Ben

Today Ben would be 6 years old if cancer hadn't ended his life way too short. I met Ben a month after he turned 2 -- I think about that all the time. Maeve just turned two less than two months ago. It terrifies me to think that she would get cancer. But, because I am a pediatric oncology nurse, I have been involved in too many families' worst nightmares. I am part of Jeff and Carin's nightmare. A nightmare that lasted a year and a half, and continues on in an entirely different way still. Because of their horrific experience and loss, they have a vision -- a vision that ends very different than their own experience with Ben.

The Ben Towne Foundation was created just over a year ago with a goal to cure all pediatric cancer. This foundation was instrumental in bringing Dr. Jensen to Seattle with the opening of Center for Childhood Cancer Research this month. Please check out recent press about it here and here. It is a bold dream. And, a bold dream is what is needed.

Happy Birthday sweet Ben. We miss you so much.
Carin and Jeff -- you are fabulous parents.
xoxo

Preschool 101...

I'm pretty sure we failed. Amy and I had pancake breakfast on Friday, which carried on through PB&J lunch, with the addition of Avery again. And, although we used to have all three kids together all the time, it seems like as they get older, they are getting exponentially more difficult to tame when you put more than 2 of them together. Weird, right?! ha ha. They are all very different in their personalities, activity level, and temperaments, but they are also all very much two. I don't have a photo of all of them together... we were just trying to survive the chaos. ha ha. At the end of the day, I'm pretty sure we can blame Baby Clara for the mayhem :-)

Introducing....

...Paul Anthony III. Congratulations Kolleen & Paul!! I am shockingly late at this post as he is now 10 days old already. I guess that's what happens when he's the 4th baby born in 2 months out of our friend group. He probably won't have any pictures taken of him or even have a baby book -- isn't that what happens with babies of families?! :-) Sorry Baby Paul! We promise to do better.

Maeve and I had our first visit today.... and seriously, he couldn't be sweeter. He has the most kissable cheeks -- even Maeve noticed! It is definitely the year of big babies -- he entered the world at 10 lbs 4 oz... Kolleen, you're a rock star! Welcome to the world Baby Paul. We're so happy that you're here!!

The Banner is Raised Once Again...

I figure that successful potty training deserves a raised banner. I feel fairly confident that by acknowledging this feat won't jinx anything (it better not!). One thing I've learned during this process -- Maeve seems to have an affinity to public bathrooms and honey buckets. Ewww. Gross. Not so awesome. She's so funny though -- every time she uses the potty she has to go tell whoever might be in the vicinity that she was successful. And, if its just the two of us, she'll run out to tell her dolls that she went pee or BM on the potty! So cute.

Anywho... Hooray Maeve!! I'm so proud of you.

Overheard...

I do enjoy flipping on the baby monitor when I know that Maeve has woken up, as she just starts babbling on about this, that, and the other. Today I realized that I probably don't have to worry about if she'll stick up for herself or not... Here is what I heard:

I need space
I big girl
Do not push Maeve's body
Stop it
Go away
No no no
Move away
I need space
Don't hit my body
Not do that
No push my back
You sit time out
Maeve a big girl
Out right now

Wowza. I guess daycare is good for her and allows her to work through conflict -- real, or imagined... but, I did think that I'd taught her to say 'please' at least.

Take home message -- don't mess with Maeve, apparently.

20 Years...

Well... when its put like that, I feel a little old. Ha. But, alas, its true. Every year I trek up to the motherland to commune with my old posse -- the girls from high school. Everyone looks so great and are doing so many amazing things... and there are kids aplenty, and a few more on the way. Thanks Ann for opening up your house for such a fun evening of catch up.

Maeve hung behind to be spoiled by Gran and Pop that evening. One of the first things she told me when she woke up the next morning was that she ate ice cream. Ha. It was a bit of an ice cream weekend, it turns out.

On Saturday we took off to meet up with Andie and her three kids as they were in town for their annual holidays. We played on the beach and caught up on life for a bit. Then we headed to Grandma and Grandpa's for the day. We headed to Summer Live and enjoyed the festivities.

Snuggles for Grandpa...

Like I said... it was an ice cream kind of weekend...

4th of July & Canada Day...

The two central themes of the long weekend were water and nakedness -- on Maeve's part, not mine... just to be clear. What a fantastic weekend. It was sunny, warm, and fun. We spent the long weekend with various friends and it just felt carefree. So carefree that Maeve decided that clothes were, in fact, optional. Ha.

Friday we celebrated Canada Day by wearing our red and white and enjoyed a quiet day at home and at the zoo, and then I had a rare night out with the girls and a movie in the theaters. That in of itself was great fun. Then Maeve and I loaded the car on Saturday morning and jumped on a ferry to begin our weekend adventure... we spent half the day with Steph, Karl, Anna, and Peter at their cabin on the beach. I'm not sure there could've been a better place to be... check out their backyard:

Ahhhh.... the Pacific Northwest at its finest.

Whaoo Hooo... says Maeve and proceeds to immediately peel off all her clothes.

Nude nudies!!! Could there be more polar opposite pigmentation going on in this photo?

Bubbles, pool time, and a picnic lunch... what could be better?

Next on the agenda was heading north to Bellingham to spend time with other great friends. We hadn't gotten away in a while, and aside from some very early mornings and some difficulties in getting a certain 2 year old to sleep, it was a success! Thanks Cj, Lance, Pax, and Beckett for letting us crash with you guys and playing with us all weekend...

Our first strawberry picking experience... I believe there were more in Maeve's tummy than in our bucket. Sounds about right...

Maeve and Beckett sharing a laugh...

Hugs all 'round...

Cowboy Pax enjoying his fares...

Eye protection necessary for bath time...

Mark, Misha, Daphne, and Fiona once again hosted their annual 4th of July gathering at their beautiful house. It was so great to catch up with all our peeps and watch the kids play. But, because there was a source for getting wet and swimming involved, Maeve found it necessary to strip down once again...

"oh hey guys... whatcha doin?"

"cheese"

Kiddy pool fun...

Party foul Maeve... why exactly do you think they're dumping the water out of the pool? Umm... Sorry again Lance. Ha

It couldn't have been a better day for lounging with friends...

Great times had by all.... (and look -- Maeve's even wearing clothes here!)
