Nap??

Apparently naps were overrated this weekend, per Maeve. No No No... You need a nap, and I need you to nap! Fine, whatever. It was too nice of a day to spend much time arguing about it. After a morning picnic at the playground and a run around the lake (ughhh... it wasn't pretty), we decided the afternoon event would be dusting off the bike and checking out the local happenings.

And... she's all strapped in, ready to rock 'n' roll. That's right Maeve... hang on!

We stopped at the Farmer's Market for some dancing...

Oh... what's this here?? Is someone tired enough to finally nap? Classic.

So... we decided to lay on the grass and snore it out together as the boats were making their way through the Locks... And, yes, she's totally drooling on me :-)

Monkeys...

We had a house of lil' monkey's this weekend... Ann, Mike, Kaya, and Zane came down for the weekend, and it was so fun. There is something to be said for friends that you don't need to see everyday, and it doesn't matter one bit. Kaya, Zane, and Maeve played well and were very excited to see each other... they also all seemed to melt at about the same time too (at least the youngest two), so that was a bit refreshing for me to experience with someone else. At one point Ann and I just looked at each other and uttered one word -- "wine". Ha ha.

The highlight of the weekend was loading up the minivan (ha ha... how times have changed) and heading to the movies. The Ben Towne Foundation had a family event, which was a private showing of Cars 2. This could not be more appropriate as Ben LOVED the movie, Cars. It is more than bittersweet to have a sequel come out with Ben not here watching it with us. But, it was truly a great honor to attend this event and pay tribute to sweet lil' Ben, as he would have been all over this. Needless to say, Maeve and I spent about half the movie in the lobby area, but it was totally fine -- it was just fun, and that was the intention....

We rested at home and then hit the playground... and then the monkeys did, what monkey's do best...

Thanks Ann, Mike, Kaya, and Zane for a fun filled weekend. We love you!!

A Mind of Her Own...

Life is a journey with a 2 year old, that's for sure. Over the course of the last week or so, we've had a bit of independence, naughtiness, and hilarity present itself.

We have entered a bit of a phase where I have to pick some battles. Redirection still works wonders with Maeve, but not every instance is that a possibility. For example, bed time. I don't know if its the late summer sunsets (yay... mostly) or just over-tiredness repeating itself, but Maeve doesn't want to go to bed these days. Wowza. She has discovered the verb - to stall. And, when that wears out its welcome, wailing and flailing occurs when she is placed gently in her crib. Little does she know that she is capable of climbing out of that thing if she really tried... but, no one tell her that. There have been a number of tactics used to achieve sleep, but they are all somewhat exhausting, on both of our parts...

And, yesterday there was a bit of naughtiness -- milk was purposely poured onto the floor, followed by instantaneous water works when I said her name in response. Maeve helped me clean it up while we had a discussion about how that was a little naughty. 20 minutes later I hear her laughing and saying "naughty... naughty..." only to see her emptying out my baker's sized salt container directly onto the floor. Another discussion about how that was a little bit naughty took place while we cleaned up that spill. The fact that she knows something is naughty is reassuring right? Ha.

Hilarity ensued when I was awakened in the middle of the night to a yelling Maeve... well, that's not the hilarious part... wait for it. First pass attempts to get her back to sleep failed, and I just flat out gave up and brought her into bed with me. This seemed like a good idea at the time, but it turned into a minor play session for Maeve -- except I was still somewhat happy because at least I was lying horizontal. About an hour into me saying, "shhhh... Maeve, its nigh nigh time", she tells me she wants me to change her diaper. I say, "its not wet, honey... it doesn't need to be changed". But, of course she insists. Fine... I'm supposed to be embracing this whole potty training, be in touch with your body thing, right? So up we get. Victory for Maeve. I ask Maeve if she needs to go potty and she says, "yes". So, there I am, crouching in front of her, cheering her on pathetically while she pees on the potty at 4am. Did I ever mention that I don't really mind diapers?

Oh Maeve. I do love you and all your sass... but, lets start agreeing to 'all things mommy' and save our potty training for daylight hours :-)

Happy Father's Day....

...and Happy Grandpa's Day from Maeve. My Dad and Lynn came down for the weekend, which worked out perfectly so that I could adequately celebrate Dad. And, how best do you celebrate your Dad? You give him Dad projects.... You want them to feel loved and appreciated right? By the end of the weekend I had a fully assembled AND functioning BBQ, a handheld shower head installed in Maeve's bath, and a fire alarm re-wired and installed... without Dad being electrocuted during the process (it was a near miss...)

Our weekend was full, and Maeve was able to show Grandma and Grandpa all her new tricks. She sure is cute, but also very much a two year old at times. I did get the comment from my Dad, "wow, you're patient"... ha ha.

They witnessed first hand the full-on potty training that Maeve decided to initiate this weekend. Someone is adamantly refusing to wear diapers or even pull-ups now. Ummm... okay. Let's just see how this goes...

Our newest household addition... (the BBQ, to be clear)

Don't smile Maeve...

Maeve showed Grandma and Grandpa her animals at the zoo today...

This photo cracks me up... Maeve likes to pretend to be blind every now and then and wandered away from us playing this game. She walked about 50 feet all the way into the viewing area and managed to bonk her head on the bench because she was still playing blind (unbeknownst to us, btw). She was very upset about this, only to be further agitated when she was having her picture taken by Grandpa.... somehow she knew we were laughing at her, and not with her. Poor thing...

And, in position for stories from our latest visitors...

Love you Dad!!

Fun-Filled...

We had a fun day. We started off the day with watching Abe shine in his school play this morning. It was so fun to see an elementary school production - it was pure and therefore, refreshing. We headed to the shopping center to do a couple of errands, which resulted in a completely saturated Maeve again. Different water fountains, same ending every time. Nap. Mini "hike" to a local park, which ended up being a nature walk for Maeve. And, then we ended the day at a full-blown neighborhood carnival, with all the fixin's for a great time. Too busy having fun to take photos there.

It is clear to me now that I need to have extra clothes in the car at all times...

"Maeve... stand there and say 'cheese' so I can take your picture.... Maeve, look at Mommy.... Maeve, say 'cheese'... What are you saying? What's over there?....... Ohhhhhhhh! Bunny Rabbits! Okay.... they win, let's go!"

We're going on a bear hunt.... swishy swashy, swishy swashy....

Bubbles!

We haven't had a video in a while, and this one you're going to have to turn up the volume to hear Maeve's side of things, but this is her first encounter with live bunny rabbits. We ran around the park after they jumped away for a good 15 min still looking for them, and wondering where they went, and why did they go away, and could they please come back!? Maeve has never committed to that much exercise before! Ha... She no longer runs with such a waddle, but it still so cute watching her run nevertheless...

Welcome Ted!

Baby Ted... we're so happy to meet you finally! Maeve and I had a quick visit to Lynn and Paul's this morning to meet their new, sweet, red-headed baby boy. He's just so yummy and we can't wait to snuggle him again. Welcome to the world Ted!

Swim Lessons...

Goodbye Gymboree... Hello Swim Lessons! Maeve and Annie have a weekly date, which now includes swimming. Annie took her to her first real swim lessons today with Maudry. The take home message was "kick kick kick..." (Annie sent me a ton of pictures and videos so that I could see how things went... Maeve liked it and did really well! So proud :-))

Start of class with Teacher Maudry

I love this picture and the scowl on Maeve's face -- "this kicking thing seems suspiciously like work, Annie..."

Lunch post swim and two happy campers...

This Never Gets Old...

Couple of Things....

Never thought I'd be saying things like... "If you don't take that meatball off your head, you don't get any more milk during dinner"...

And, am I the only one that thinks the book, "Love you Forever" is a bit whacked? Just sayin'...

Saturdays...

It almost feels like summer... and its really fun to see life through Maeve's eyes.

Today was a solid day. Thankfully Maeve decided to sleep in this morning as I had been up late attending an awesome fundraising party for Dwankhozi Hope. Check them out -- they're doing amazing things.

We headed off to our Ethiopian play group this morning - always fun to see our community. After nap we headed out for a bike ride in our neighborhood. Maeve has figured out how to pedal now -- not so much that she can push her own weight, but she happily pedals, sings songs, and hits her bell occasionally as I'm pushing her along.

It seemed like the perfect excuse to take a break and enjoy a treat...

And, then we pedaled our way to the local spray park... I just let Maeve at it, and she had a blast.

"Wet" doesn't explain how drenched she was on the return trip...

There was a trip through the car wash this afternoon and then some bubble wands in action. Very carefree and productive day, in the fun department.

Sadly, with one addition, there are a couple departures... Amber and Avery can no longer join us in our weekly tradition :-(

Date Night...

Maeve had a date tonight with Dan. It was really cute -- they both dressed up, he got her a flower in the form of a balloon, and they headed off with the soundtrack of "slippery fish, slippery fish...." in the background.

Maeve's daycare had a little father's day event this evening, and because I want to normalize these types of holidays for her and not have them feel exclusive, but rather inclusive, I'm utilizing the special people we have in our lives to fill certain roles. Dan is one of Maeve's godfather's, so it was the perfect pairing. After the party they carried on to dinner and then a trip to the cupcake store. I love watching the two of them together and how they love each other....

What was I doing while Maeve was being spoiled? Annie and I headed off for Ethiopian food, wine and good conversation. Fun times had by all...

Family Portrait...

Maeve's dolls have become members of our family now. We name them, feed them, walk them, undress them, read to them, and make sure they are propped up so they can watch whatever Maeve is doing at any given time... Its hard for me to get Maeve to look at a camera these days, but tell her you're going to take a picture of her and all her babies, I get a perfect model (aside from her new "cheese" face.. ha).

In order, we have: Shaun the Sheep, Baby Kat, Mini Maeve, Baby, Alice, and their doting Mommy...

All members of the family were cheering on the Canucks tonight. Yeah... we're not talking about it.

Another Episode of...

..."It's hard to be Maeve".

Here she is all pampered and set for our stroll to breakfast (Gran was in town for the night)...

Then we spoiled ourselves with breakfast out. Here is Maeve's "cheese" face. Nice.

Then there were some dance moves at the Farmer's Market... a little hopping, twirling, and shaking of the booty variety.

And then Gran bought Maeve a special lil' cupcake treat...

And all of that is exhausting... it would seem.

U2 360 - deja vu...

A HUGE shout out to Randy and Kim who hooked us up royally again... ahhhhhhhhhh. My date with my boyfriend couldn't have been better. I didn't think that we could replicate the awesomeness that we experienced in Vancouver a year and half ago... but, I think we did. Ann and I were pole positioned even better this time, and by midway through the concert we were only three heads back from center stage. Unfortunately, this meant that Bono could actually see my drool... oh well. Nevermind.

Pre concert and in position...

Lenny Kravitz was awesome and smooth...

And, then... I don't even need to say anymore...

And, I'm pretty sure Bono was singing this song just to me... pretty sure anyway.

Thank you so much Randy and Kim!!!

In 24 Hours...

...I have a date with my boyfriend.
